About Ben Hindley

When did you start working for Gray Healthcare?

April 2022

Your role:

Ben is one of our PROACT-SCIPr-UK® Instructors.  PROACT-SCIPr-UK® is a ‘whole approach’ framework to support individuals who may present with behaviour perceived to be challenging. The PROACT-SCIPr-UK® framework is implemented in services throughout the UK and courses are accredited by the British Institute of Learning Disability (BILD) PI Accreditation Scheme.  Ben is responsible for delivering our company-wide PROACT-SCIPr-UK® and First Aid training programme.  As well as delivering both induction training and regular refresher courses, Ben visits each package of support and undertakes on-site training if required.

Ben is a certified PROACT-SCIPr-UK® Instructor and Qualified Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Practitioner. He also holds a BA (Hons) Degree in Communication and Culture (2:1) from John Moore University in Liverpool.

Before joining Gray Healthcare:

With a strong interest in travel,  Ben chose to study Communication and Culture at John Moore University in Liverpool after leaving school, attracted by the course’s overseas placement year.  Ben spent his placement year in Malawi and Tanzania teaching English as a foreign language.  After completing his university studies, Ben was initially keen to return to Africa to continue teaching.  However, a chance encounter with a young person with learning disabilities accompanied by their Support Worker convinced him that he could make a difference in this country.  His first role as a Support Worker was supporting a person with learning disabilities within the community.  When the service provider changed, he moved with the person he was supporting into a management role with the new provider, ensuring continuity of care.  However, he missed the hands-on nature of caring and applied to Gray Healthcare to return to a more direct support role.  Having been inspired by the training programme offered at Gray Healthcare, when the opportunity arose to train as a PROACT-SCIPr-UK® Instructor, Ben applied for the role and was successful.

What do you like about working at Gray Healthcare?

‘Working here feels like being part of a family, and after experiencing roles where I was less happy, I really value the support and encouragement I receive.  Because every member of the senior management team has experience as a support worker, they truly understand the role and can offer practical support. When we deliver the PROACT-SCIPr-UK® training to our teams for the first time, it is fantastic to see the positive response it receives and watching people have that lightbulb moment as they learn how to confidently and effectively manage behaviours perceived to be challenging.  My role allows me to see the learning in action during team visits and to witness the outcomes first-hand.  Making a difference has always been my dream, and knowing that I’ve contributed to someone’s happiness and fulfilment is deeply rewarding.’

Gray Healthcare in three words:

‘Family, supportive, inspiring’
