At Gray Healthcare, supporting the mental health and wellbeing of our colleages has always been fundamentally important to us.
As a specialist provider supporting individuals with complex mental health needs, learning disabilities, autism and acquired brain injury, we understand the importance of creating environments where people feel safe, valued, respected and supported. That commitment extends not only to the individuals we support, but also to our colleagues across the entire organisation.
This Mental Health Awareness Week, we are proud to announce that Gray Healthcare has signed the Mental Health at Work Commitment, developed by Mind to help organisations create healthier and more supportive workplaces.
By signing the Commitment, we are reinforcing our dedication to creating a healthy, supportive and safe workplace where mental health and wellbeing are prioritised at every level of the organisation.
Mental health affects every workplace.
According to research, one in four people will experience a mental health problem each year, while work-related stress, anxiety and burnout continue to impact organisations across all sectors. Within health and social care particularly, the emotional demands of supporting others can place significant pressure on staff wellbeing if appropriate support systems are not in place.
At Gray Healthcare, we recognise that maintaining a healthy workplace culture requires more than good intentions. It requires proactive support, open conversations, strong leadership and a genuine commitment to employee wellbeing.
The Mental Health at Work Commitment provides a framework for organisations to achieve this by focusing on six clear standards:
These principles strongly align with our values, and the wider social value work currently being developed across our organisation.
At Gray Healthcare, we actively encourage open and honest conversations about mental health and wellbeing.
We understand that our colleagues perform at their best when they feel psychologically safe, supported and respected. That means creating an environment where colleagues feel comfortable speaking about wellbeing concerns, and where support is accessible without stigma or judgement.
As part of our ongoing commitment to workplace wellbeing, we continue to focus on:
Importantly, we recognise that mental health support should not only be available during times of crisis. Preventative support and early intervention are equally important in helping people maintain positive wellbeing over the long term.
As part of our commitment to employee wellbeing, we provide staff access to health and wellbeing support through our partnership with Westfield Health.
Through the Westfield Health benefits portal, colleagues can access a range of wellbeing resources and support services designed to promote both physical and mental wellbeing.
This includes access to:
Providing access to these services helps ensure that support is available when people need it, while also encouraging colleagues to take a proactive approach to their wellbeing.
Working within health and social care is incredibly rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding.
Many of our colleagues support individuals with highly complex needs, including people experiencing significant mental health challenges, behaviour perceived to be challenging, trauma histories or long-term health conditions. We recognise the importance of ensuring our teams feel supported in these environments.
At Gray Healthcare, we believe that prioritising staff wellbeing directly supports the quality of care we provide. When colleagues feel supported, valued and psychologically safe, they are better equipped to deliver compassionate, person-centred care to the individuals we support.
This is why mental health awareness remains an ongoing priority across our organisation — not only during Mental Health Awareness Week, but throughout the year.
Signing the Mental Health at Work Commitment also forms part of our wider focus on social value and responsible organisational practice.
As we continue developing our social value framework, supporting employee wellbeing remains a key area of focus. Creating healthier workplaces, supporting mental wellbeing and fostering inclusive working environments are all essential components of delivering positive social impact.
For us, social value is not separate from service delivery – it is embedded within how we support our colleagues, work with our communities and deliver care.
Signing the Mental Health at Work Commitment is an important milestone, but it is only one part of our ongoing commitment to workplace wellbeing.
At Gray Healthcare, we will continue to:
We are proud to stand alongside organisations across the UK in recognising the importance of mental health at work, and in taking proactive steps to support our colleagues.
