What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is a ‘person-centred framework for providing long-term support to people with a learning disability, and/or autism, including those with mental health conditions, who have, or may be a risk of developing, behaviours that challenge’ (Care Quality Commission)
The people we support can often experience significant challenges. This can manifest itself in ways that present as a risk to themselves or others. For us, behaviour that is perceived to be challenging is something that occurs, it is not a person simply being difficult. At Gray Healthcare we don’t label people as ‘challenging’, instead we invest our time and effort into understanding the reason behind what caused the behaviour. A core part of our positive behaviour support is to understand why someone is responding the way they are and adapt our support to enable them to respond more positively and effectively.
Providing bespoke Positive Behaviour Support
Positive Behaviour Support is a widely used and person-centred approach to identifying and meeting a person’s support needs. It provides a framework to work within and affects all aspects of our organisation and all elements of our work. Through our training programme, we make sure that our staff have the knowledge and skills to be able to deliver responsive and caring support to people with complex needs. Positive Behaviour Support is fully embedded across our organisation.
