My Best Day (10)

‘The gentleman I support has Korsakoff’s Syndrome and when he first came to us at Gray Healthcare he was low in mood and had no motivation whatsoever. Every time we suggested an outing, he would think of a reason not to leave the house. Every day followed the same pattern, and at times it did feel that we might never make a positive difference to his life.  However, we persisted and kept dropping ideas and eventually we managed to get him to leave the house.

My best day out has to be the first time we took a day trip to York.  York seemed a good choice for our first major outing because the gentleman I support loves history. We first planted the seed of a trip to York, then we began planning the day together.  It was a brilliant day – we visited York Minster, climbed the walls, watched street performers at the market and enjoyed a meal in one of the Roman Bath restaurants.  For me it was just wonderful to see him so happy and to know that we had finally made a significant breakthrough. Now York is one of our favourite places to visit together!  At the end of the month, we have a visit planned to Edinburgh and we are also planning a trip to Blackpool to see the illuminations.’
