My Best Day (7)

‘The gentleman I support has ASD and psychosis and when the team first met him, he would not speak,  would hardly leave the house, found it difficult to build relationships with people and would not get involved in new activities.  He refused to have any decorations in his flat and would wear the same style of clothes every day. He did not like to be seen or heard by others and would not leave any finger or foot prints behind.   To aid communication, we introduced a ‘Talking Mat’.

This technology has made a huge difference to this individual’s life – for the first time in years he can fully communicate his wishes and needs, make his own decisions and is empowered.  He has now made so much progress.  His flat is more homely, and he has chosen his own paint and furnishings. He now wears new outfits and regularly visits the cinema and cafes.  However, my best day was when he went on his first ever holiday to the seaside. This was such a fantastic trip and he even walked on the sand leaving his footprints behind!’
