Non-verbal communication tools
Some of the people we support are non-verbal, others have difficulty expressing themselves and making their feelings and needs known. One of the five drivers of our clinical framework is co-production; enabling the people we support to make their own choices about how they live their lives and to have control over the way in which they are supported.
The non-verbal communication tools we use
The way we achieve this level of independence and control for people is by using a variety of evidence-based non-verbal communication tools such as the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and Talking Mats.
Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
PECS is a non-verbal communication tool that allows people with little or no communication ability to communicate using pictures. Its primary purpose is to equip individuals with a way to communicate their functional needs, for example, that they need a drink, but it can also be used to teach people a way of showing others how they are feeling that day, which can help their support network to tailor their approach to providing support on a day-to-day basis.
Talking Mats
Talking Mats is another established non-verbal communication tool, using a mat with symbols. By using a talking mat we can help non-verbal people understand, consider and express their views in a visual way.
A talking mat can help non-verbal adults to think about information by splitting it into smaller and more manageable pieces. The benefit of using this style of non-verbal communication tool is that it can help increase how someone engages with others, and allows them to make informed decisions.
A real example of non-verbal communication tools for adults
We believe that it is important that more people can see how powerful and life-changing non-verbal communication tools can be in a support environment. Here is just one example of how we have used non-verbal communication tools to help provide someone we support with the ability to make decisions and be more independent:
‘His team recognised that he would say ‘coke’ to indicate he needed something, so they introduced, consistently used, and always made available, a Picture Exchange Communication System for communication. He now takes a lead in decisions in all aspects of his life and trips out are no longer limited, but include go-carting, swimming and day trips- a favourite being the Safari Park.’
